I bet you didn't realize you needed a soothing six-minute video on making chicken soup, but you do! This one starts with Chicken Broth the Long Way (as seen in Something from Nothing), a thing everyone should know how to make and want to make at least once a month. Alison Makes Fish Stew with Browned Butter

After watching I AM LOVE on @mubi, which is part of their LETS EAT! FOOD & FILM collection, I was inspired to become Tilda Swinton, move to Italy, redecorate my house and also make a fish soup. None of those things happened because life is not a movie, folks! But I did go to Fish Tales and buy mussels and a nice piece of lemon sole and turned it into a lovely little white wine bouillabaisse. Alison Makes Osso Buco Ragu at Home

A perfect low and slow braise using the perpetually under-valued beef shin/shank, a cut full of fabulous flavor, tons of sticky cartilage and luscious bone marrow that slips out and melts into the sauce. There's also onions, garlic, tomato paste and a drinkable but not expensive wine -- that's kinda it. It's low-intervention winter cooking at its finest and yes, we’re using a heavy-bottomed pot because we are adults and we own one. Alison Makes Olive Oil Blueberry Cake

Recipe for this Olive Oil Blueberry Cake in this week’s newsletter (https://www.alisoneroman.com/newsletters/). It’s not all that sweet, denser than a muffin, is made with olive oil and yogurt, contains chia and flax (because the addition of both keeps this cake so delightfully tender for days and allows for way more fruit in the batter than usual), has a bit of cinnamon, very crunchy edges and so many blueberries. My household (one adult) has agreed it is the most delicious cake I’ve made in a long time. If I opened a version of Erewhon (I won’t), I would serve this cake. Video by this cakes

I've said "I'm never hosting again" several times this year-- AND YET HERE I AM. Here I present a very good make ahead meal for a casual non holiday dinner in the midst of the holidays: Spicy Braised Short Ribs, Caramelized Beans with Tomato and Cabbage, Scallion/Cilantro Salad, some tortillas warmed in the leftover short rib fat. And drinks! I have graduated from bathtub to proper ice bucket, for which to chill my Señorita drinks because however you want to enjoy yourself I want you to enjoy yourself. Real juice, organic agave, no alcohol which means best of all, no hangover. #ad #21+

Chili Beans

A bowl of brothy Chili Beans for me and my tiny son (loves beans). Chili Beans as in beans cooked with lots and lots of dried chilies— more fruity than spicy, they can be served on the soupier, brothier side topped like chili with scallion, cilantro and spoonfuls of Karoun Dairies Labne, or strained and tossed with those same herbs and onions all chopped together like more of a salad. I used Lima beans, though my favorites are large gigante beans, but truly, “any bean” will work. ✨Full recipe in Something from Nothing ✨

Labne Morning

Hello good morning this is my breakfast as of late which I like to enjoy around 10:30/11, and that feels very luxurious. A six minute egg (no ice bath), Karoun Dairies labne with caramelized harissa (I am loving Lamiri Harissa - we carry it at First Bloom Corner Store!), crunchy raw vegetables, lavash from Sahadis, and not talking to anyone. Recipe for the caramelized harissa dip can be found in Something From Nothing.
