Setting aside whatever objection you might have to Amazon, Prime Day is simply confusing at a basic, ontological level.
What is a product?
What would it mean to 'want' or 'need' one?
What is a price, or a sale, or a deal?
Is any given product truly one, or merely a medium for the supposed deal?

As a former Angeleno, I have willingly hated San Francisco for decades absent good or even any reason. The tech industry has probably been ruining it for at least 30 years, with ups and downs. But setting that aside, I just never believed San Francisco to be a great world city subject to ruination.

We will have to wait and see what this really is, but Apple is very, very late to "smart home" stuff, and widgets on screens that show your reminders is not really the issue: Rather, the janky interoperation of actual devices, such as locks, alarms, garage doors, and so forth.

Okay this took a minute but:
"This is your brain on drugs" is more famous in the sense of common or well-known. But "I learned it by watching you" is more appealing due to being more esoteric, which is a GenX value. So the latter nearly equalizes the matter, by virtue of esoterics trumping fame.

The point of the decades we spent with Derrida wasn’t that writing was just as close to thought as speech, but that simple accounts of any such closeness were inherently doomed to break down. The point was that the immediacy was a fantasy.

The 2027 US News college rankings are out. College rankings are deeply cursed, but here's an uncommon complaint about them:
Too many schools are ranked at the same rung in a "tie" that seems fake, as if designed to keep the schools hooked.
If you're gonna rank colleges arbitrarily, do it.

Why did this take me so long to do? I don't think I realized that you can get a little box that accepts the coax input, connects to your network, and streams the over-the-air signal to phones and Apple TV and the like.

Has anyone posted actual image comparisons of the variable aperture settings? Absolutely bananas that Apple didn’t show this but hey.

Yeah. It's mostly been entry into the club since the start. We pretended it was for everyone, for a while—and need-blind admissions and aid are still an example of that. But even those just provide entry into the club.

Yes. Different topic, in essence. I've written about "college life" several times before: Even if you do not attend a residential 4-year college, that concept guides the whole sector—and indeed a great deal of American life.

American college has faced three successive crises: COVID, the Trump research-funding chaos, and artificial intelligence. Together, the three have revealed that higher education is a bundle of incompatible missions. That tenuous marriage is unraveling—and has been for a long time.

Apple One is a real disappointment. I don't want all of the services, but I'd pay Apple more than I do for a bundle if the bundle had services I actually want.

People, myself included, are trying to understand why streaming services feel like a rip-off compared to prior (and yes, systemically different) paid television-entertainment options. The fact that there are differences is the reason to do the comparison.

Basic cable cost ~$16/mo in 1989, and a premium channel like HBO cost ~$10 more. That's ~$70/mo in today's dollars. But you got all the channels and a lot of value from the premium ones.
$15/mo for Apple TV is 60% of what HBO would have felt like in 1990. But it feels like nothing near that value.

It's kind of amazing how every customer relationship is now aggressively antagonistic. You'd think at some basic level, companies would want you not to literally hate them, and yet they do not.

Wait, what is this for? Is the idea is that spending $1,200 (to $2,000 or more) on one phone every year is insufficient so now you can spend that on two—plus the monthly charge to use it?

It's shameful and embarrassing to be asked—and then to consider and even to willingly carry out—a 5am, 7am or even 8am Saturday morning rousing in order to buy a marginally improved version of a $1,200 palm computer you also basically already own.
