Earlier this year, two friends asked some engineers to help them create a viral gizmo: a compass that points only to the Olive Garden in Times Square. The compass consisted of a G.P.S. module, a motor, and a power source—“I think it’s a vape battery,” one of the creators said. Then came 5,000 orders—as well as a cease and desist letter from the restaurant chain. The compass’s creators, Jason Goldberg and Steve Nasopoulos, are planning on choosing a new endpoint, but decided to test drive the original for fun.
